This is the first biography of Elliott White Springs (1896-1959), who was fifth-ranking U.S. pilot of World War I, best-selling author, advertising genius, and maverick maser of a textile manufacturing empire. War Birds, his masterpiece, inspired many books and films on the youth of World War I and the twenties. During the depression, Springs expanded the family textile mills in South Carolina, as others were retrenching, and made Springmaid sheets and the Springmaid girls household words.
Elliott White Springs (1896–1959), was a South Carolina businessman and an American flying ace of World War I, credited with shooting down 16 enemy aircraft.
