    Description

This is an original U.S. Army WWII 1942-dated aluminum M1910 canteen and M1910 canteen cup, both made by the same manufacturer, A.G.M. The initials A.G.M. are for the "Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Company" of Manitowoc, Wisconsin.  The company received multiple contracts from the US Army to make canteens, meat cans (mess kits), and cartridge cases during WWII. They received US Army contracts in July and November, 1942 to make canteens and canteen cups. These contracts, worth 2,000, were fulfilled in November, 1942, and January, 1943. ************* This canteen and cup set are both the M1910 style, the canteen has an aluminum body and cap, and has a vertical welded seam up the side. The cup is made of aluminum with a rolled lip, and has a galvanized (zinc-plated) steel handle. The canteen has a galvanized chain, and there is a cork inside to prevent the contents from leaking. Both are clearly stamped with "A.G.M. Co. 1942," see photos. ********** This is a nice original early WWII canteen and cup set, it is in excellent condition. The canteen is in fine shape with no dents other than a slight 3/4 inch shallow crease at the point where the top of the cup contacts it. The galvanized steel chain is slightly darkened but not rusted, the cap is in fine shape with just a few scratches to the knurled outside, and it has its factory original cork. There is some very slight wear and scratches, and a little wear where the snaps of a canteen cover contacted the top of the canteen. A soldier had very lightly scratched a letter "B" on the front of the canteen, and lightly scribed his name, "BEAL," near the inside middle. The bottom of the canteen is slightly darkened from age and use but is overall in excellent condition. The cup is in comparably fine shape, shows some very light wear and one small ding. The galvanized steel handle has darkened from age but is not rusted. A soldier very lightly scribed his initials and Army Serial Number on the bottom, this looks like HLM and 37179475. He also scratched in small letters "HL" above this.  Overall the cup is in excellent condition with light wear.  ******** This is a very nice matched set of canteen and cup, used by two different US Army GI's during WWII. Hard to find these in good shape without major dents and rust to steel parts, both of these are in excellent condition. This type of canteen is exactly the type used by US Army infantry troops and paratroopers during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France in 1944, and used in all theaters of operations involving the US Army. It is a very sound and serviceable canteen set, displays nicely, and is a great example of the M1910 aluminum canteen and cup as used in the early days of WWII. The auction is for one (1) canteen, and one (1) cup, exactly as shown in the photos (some photos are composites with the same canteen and cup shown twice in the same photo.)
