Description
This is an original U.S. Army WWII set of stainless steel M1942 canteen dated 1943 and an aluminum M1910 canteen cup dated 1944. The canteen is by a scarce maker, Rutenber Electric. The Rutenber Electric company, of Marion, Indiana, contracted with the US Army in WWII to produce steel goods, including lockers and canteens. The cup, stamped E.A. Co., was made by the Enterprise Aluminum Company of Massillon, Ohio. Enterprise Aluminum was a major contractor for US Army aluminum goods during WWII, making mess trays, kitchen equipment, canteens, and canteen cups. ************ The canteen is the M1942 style made of stainless steel, welded in two parts with a horizontal seam about 2/3 up the canteen. The cap is black bakelite or plastic, attached to the canteen with a galvanized steel chain. Stamped into the bottom.is "U.S. RUTENBER ELECTRIC CO. 1943" The canteen cork is missing, but the inside of the cap is embossed with "US" and "1943." The cup is the M1910 style, made of aluminum with a rolled lip and having a galvanized (zinc-plated) steel handle. It is stamped in the bottom with "U.S. E.A. CO. 1944." ********** The canteen is in excellent condition, with no dents or dings, just some wear from sliding in and out of a canteen cup, and some darkening from age. The cup is in excellent-plus to near mint condition, very lightly used, with no names or anything scratched into it. This is a very nice set of canteen and cup, with canteen by a scarce maker. This is exactly the type of canteen and cup used by US Army infantry troops and paratroopers during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France in 1944, and used in all theaters of operations involving the US Army and US Marine Corps (USMC used the same canteens and cups as the US Army, though their canteen covers were of a different style). It is a very sound and serviceable canteen set, displays nicely, and is a great example of the M1942 canteen and M1910 canteen cup. The auction is for one (1) canteen, and one (1) cup, exactly as shown in photos (some photos are composites and contain two images of the canteen and cup, but it is the same set of items).******* Free shipping to a US address.
