    ULTR RARE WW1 U.S. NAVY AVIATION HANDBOOK, "THE HS-1L FLYING BOAT HANDBOOK  Navy Department Bureau of Construction and Repair July, 1918", hardcover, GPO, 44 pages plus 10 fold out schematics, photos, diagrams, approx. 7 7/8" x 4 7/8". Armed with a Lewis machine gun and two 180 lb depth charges, the Curtiss HS-1L Flying Boat was the standard Coastal Patrol Aircraft of the U.S. Navy during this period.  It was flown at Naval Air Stations in the U.S. and overseas in the Azores (flown by Marine aviators) and in France. Replaced by the HS-2L,  there are 2 pages of notes in the handbook, explaining what is necessary to make the converson. From the Introduction 'The following text is designed to give the most satisfactory current practice of handling large flying boats with particular attention to unpacking and assembling.' Book in Very Good Condition. Book is complete, twelve center pages are intact but detached, looks like the binding may have been neatly reglued at some point, minor pencil mark, a few minor black spots on cover, owner's name on front end paper. Please refer to photographs. FREE INSURED SHIPPING.
