$ 18.48

Availability: 100 in stock
  • Original/Reproduction: Original
  • Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
  • Region of Origin: United States
  • Modification Description: Used by the US Army in WW2 although made originally for use in WW1. The handle is a different color from the bag and the print inside the flap indicates use in WW2.
  • Condition: Very Good condition. This hand-held toolkit still has the WW1 markings on the back indicating it was meant for: "Saddlers/ Horseshoers/ Carpenters and /Wheelwrights/ Blacksmiths." However, the inside of the closing flap is marked and dated, Q.M.D./ JEFF/ 1945. This holdover from WW1, used in WW2, is a symbol of the U.S. Army's transition from a cavalry horse army to a modern mechanized one. Even the item itself shows that transition: it is mostly the dark olive drab of WW2 but has a kaki handle the color used by the U.S, army in WW1. This item has been used and was found in a garage in the upper Midwest of the United States. The single inside pocket has a rust stain, the kit overall has spotting and soil. The print on the back indicating its (WW1) use is faded but mostly readable. There are no holes and the handle and straps are in excellent condition (please see photos). The toolkit is clearly stamped on the front with the US Army's "US."

    Description

    U.S. Army Toolkit
    Made for
    WW1, Used in WW2
    Meant Originally for Horseshoers & Blacksmiths
    Used in WW2 for Mechanical Repair
    This toolkit, as we say above in the initial description of the item, is a symbol of the transformation of the US Army from a horseback army in WW1 to a mechanized army in WW2.
    The print on the back of the satchel clearly indicates this.
    The model, it says, is one from 1921, but on the inside of the closing flap is the shipping source of the toolkit and the date of 1945.
    Found in a garage in Northern Minnesota, it has had some use resulting in a small rust stain and other stains and soil.  The initial print can still be partly read on the back.  The inside has one pocket with a curved bottom.
    The canvas handle is securely attached to the body and the closing straps are strongly sewn to the body with the last approximately 10" loose.  The original hardware is used.  The close is excellent and stable.
    The kit measures approximately 17"x9.5" closed.  With the flap open it measures approximately 17"x14.5".  The satchel-like body has no delineated floor but expands as items are placed in it.  The single inside pocket is curved at the bottom and well sewn in.
