WWII 1940 US Army M1928 Haversack Canvas Mess Kit /Pouch/Carrier

I have no knowledge of military items so used information from other similar listings, and DO NOT
mean to misrepresent.  It was my husbands's who collected militaria as a boy.
Believe this is an Army mess kit carrier.  The only markings are on inside pocket, "I or L.Q.M.D."
It is very clean for its age with good overall green color.  Trim is tan.
There are some spots and a small hole at top of left side.
Do not know the metals used on front fasteners and back holders. There is some corrosion on buckle.
There is a cloth strap attached--a twill-like material 3/4" W x 40" L.  Same Army green color.
Don't know if original to pouch as seems too flimsy to carry much. Also appears to be attached
by a combination of machine and hand stitching.
Inside has lots of loose strings at seams.  The 3 pockets are like new (although found 2 bullets)
The left pocket has a dark brown pocketed insert. (See pic. 11)  Think it is a leather sheath for a knife. (See pic. 2)
